Painting the Gallery Panels

The gallery walls are made of poured concrete, requiring some system for hanging art. After many conversations with artists and friends (and an architect!) about different hanging systems (mostly suspensions from the ceiling), I decided my best option was to place wood panels on those concrete walls. Different shapes and sizes provide an architectural feature to what were otherwise flat walls. It will be interesting to see how they get used.

Tom Zuelke helped start the installation process and Michael Kautzer installed the final pieces.

In this photo, the primer coat of white is being applied. They will be finished within a day or so. -Erico

Thanks, Kay! It's been a labor of love, I suppose. I enjoy learning new things. I never knew a thing about creating websites.... and here I am adding to my own almost daily. Even yesterday, someone else asked for advice on creating a website. I was able to answer all the questions, which was good. Can't wait for you to see the space!

Erico Ortiz

Erico Ortiz was born in Cayey, Puerto Rico and was raised in Milwaukee. He earned his undergraduate degree at Marquette University (Spanish Education) and a Masters Degree from UW-Milwaukee (Administrative Leadership). After working for Milwaukee Public Schools (teacher, administrator) for 33 years, it was time for retirement and a new direction.
Erico has worked with several community theatre companies, both on stage and behind the scenes, something he still enjoys today, and is a board member of the Village Playhouse. He plays guitar and can be found Sunday mornings directing the Spanish choir at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish in Milwaukee.
Painting has become a passion since retirement in 2011, leading to the development of Erico's Gallery. Since then, he has delved into the arts world by becoming involved with Riverwest Artists Association and the Sheboygan Visual Artists. This latest venture, the purchase of an art gallery and performance space should prove to be exciting.
