Creativity has always been central to my life. I was fortunate to spend my childhood with a thoughtful, creative, sometimes nontraditional grandmother who encouraged me to think beyond the expectations. Grandma Patterson and I spent many afternoons “doing” arts and crafts. Whether creating projects from recycled materials—things like glass bottles, newspaper, empty bleach bottles, or making items from scratch, Grandma always encouraged me to experiment, to try whatever flew into my head at the time while telling me “Great!” or “Yes!” or “No, because…”
I remember my childhood as a magical time to explore, to realize what life has to offer for me as a kid, and having the sanctity of Grandma’s permission to do that. As an adult, I’ve gone back to what my childhood brought to me. Grandma’s love, her support, her influence have been invaluable in the creative process I employ today in the creation of graphic design, wall art and furniture. “Shoot For The Moon” is the theme of this installation by Thom J. Ertl Designs. CONVENTIONAL utilitarian items become UN-CONVENTIONAL, modern, artistic, practical, provocative original home furnishings and interior design. “Found” becomes urban, sleek and fun.
