I have always loved to draw and it seems that some things never change. At a young age I drew girls, flowers, and horses. I still love to draw these things, but now I also paint them. My current work is a combination of my many interests. Including traveling, sports, flowers, horses, and drawing women's faces.

I love beautiful things and when I see them, I want to paint them. Incorporating different patterns and colors into my work is fun and interesting. When I walk around I see objects in different shades and hues and want to paint them as they are in my mind.

My work has a simple statement – enjoy the beauty and colors around you. I am influenced by the impressionist artists and the Fauve movement. I love bright colors and experimenting with different ways to paint. My ideal medium is watercolors (especially watercolor pencils), but I also like acrylics. I really like oil and hope to do more work with oils this summer.

My art is an exploration. Whether it deals with realism, surrealism or abstract, the approach is to look at something a little differently. There are a number of influences ranging from the Dutch masters through impressionism, with some pop art and modern in the mix.

It is difficult to center on any one subject at this point. There are many things and events that happen in a given year, and I try to embrace as much as my mind can handle. Since there are many things to draw ideas from, it is my venture to capture as much as I can. Whether obvious to the viewer, or having a certain meaning to myself but purposely left ambiguous to the viewer, there is a range of pieces for people to enjoy.

There’s a series of paintings and drawings that are taken from fashion photography. I am definitely not a follower of fashion, but do have an appreciation for the style and quality of fashion photography. There are pieces that come from traveling, including places such as Hawaii and Jamaica. Nature is something I have always appreciated, and I try to incorporate organic shapes and elements of nature as well.

It is a pleasure to share a show with my spouse. As you will see, there are some elements of  similarity, but many points of difference.

Thank you and enjoy!
Derek
